A Harlequin set of eight 19th-century yew tree smokers’ bow Windsor chairs. Raised on turned legs with H stretches above a saddle-shaped ash seat. Eight spindle turnings support the broad arms below a deep bow-shaped backrest.
Sometimes called Captain’s chairs and noted for their extreme comfort and durability, they were commonly used in pubs and eating houses as well as Gentlemen’s clubs.
Most examples tend to be constructed in ash elm and birch. It is unusual to find a set made from Yew tree, which gives a wonderful texture and patination.
