A very rare early 18th century George I thuya wood and yew tree games table. Raised on burr yew tree pad foot cabriole legs. The quartered top and frieze veneered in tightly grained burr thuya.
The table is unusual for two reasons. Firstly, it’s oversized proportions make it exceptionally large for this type of table. Coupled with the concertina leg action, it creates a full surrounding frame, enabling four players to sit comfortably around the table. Inside the framed construction is an oak slide with boxes to house gaming cards and accessories
Secondly it is extremely rare to find a table constructed with bur wood legs. It was generally accepted that burr wood of any type was too brittle for the use of legs. There are always exceptions to the rule.
The table when open has an impressive baize covered playing area and has a candlestick place in each corner.
